This aging Italian gentleman was challenging because of his unusual beard which was actually under his chin. I chose to draw him on a dark grey paper and work both lights and darks onto the middle value of the paper.

This was done with green soft pastels on a reddish paper. The glow of the page beneath the pigment completes the piece.

This woman carries herself with such strength. I finally was able to get her to pose for this portrait. I have not quite captured her yet, but will try another in the future.
